Five Star Building But Not Five Star Service
We splurged for the Presidential Suite in the Guadalajara Riu and compared to other suites in the hotel, it was considerably more expensive. Based on the photos and description, we thought it would be worth it. Not so much, as it turns out. The room itself measured up to the description, but the condition of the room and the caliber of the service didn't come close to what we see in most five star establishments, including many others in Mexico. Here is a short list of the areas in which Rui fell short: 1. Free minibar was included in the high price of this suite. What do you get for that? Soft drinks and 2 beers. 2. After you use the water and coffee they provide, you don't get more when daily maid service occurs. You have to ask for it. 3. Stains were present, some offensive and off-putting, on some of the furniture. 4. The room was too cold and the bedding was inadequate to allow us to sleep at a normal temperature. Once we learned that the AC stays on all night regardless of how the thermostat is set, things got better, and once we asked for blankets and more than the one pillow that was provided per person, things got better, that is UNTIL: 5. The music on the rooftop bar, one floor above our top floor Presidential Suite, was so loud after 11 pm that it was impossible to sleep. After 2 calls to the front desk and a considerable wait, the music was finally turned down. 6. There is a nice, large shower but it was quite dark because one of the two light bulbs was out, and this shortcoming was never noticed by staff. Or if noticed, it wasn't fixed. 7. When I asked for more water the day before we were to check out, at around 9 in the morning, we were told that we couldn't have more water because the hotel's policy is to refuse to refresh water on the day of checkout. I found this shocking since the hotel warns guests not to drink the tap water and not to use it for such basic things as brushing your teeth. Evidently the corporate office places a higher priority on saving money on the cost of bottled water than the health of their guests. They did ultimately provide us with water. But then again, we weren't even checking out for one more day! 8. Most 5 star hotels provide turn down service. I personally don't care much about this but Rui doesn't provide it. 9. I do like the chocolates that 5 star hotels provide with turn down service and one night, an attendant came by and offered us the most un-special chocolates there are----Hersey's kisses. 10. There is a Club Room available for guests who pay for certain rooms, and of course, that was included with our suite. However, we found that the Club Room is not worth visiting, either for it's atmosphere or it's food and the weak assortment of beer and wine that is sometimes present there. Actually, both times we went in they failed to have both red and white wine, which they say they offer. In short, almost none of the personalized service we have come to expect in 5 star hotels was present here. There were a number of people who were helpful to us. Hugo, in particular, was a beacon of superior service and we are very grateful to him. The breakfast service is on par with mid-tier 5 stars, and for that we were grateful. The building itself is well decorated and the common areas are well maintained. I leave with the impression that the staff is not well supported by upper management and that they are in the uncomfortable position of having to do too much with too little support. Perhaps this is because it is challenging to fill so many rooms in such a large hotel in a market like Guadalajara, and most rooms are sold at low rates making it a challenge to achieve profitability. For those seeking a more special experience and willing to pay for it, I would steer clear of the Rui.

1st Time Visitor!
A work trip became a vacation as well! 2 week stay and a lifetime of memories. I look forward to the next time I can stay at a RIU Resort!

Much better than expected.
Far surpassing expectations in terms of facilities and service, though location is not walkable to any points of interest.

Dec 2024 stay at the Riu
I have been coming to GDL for the last 10+ years for work. I always choose the Riu and I really like the Riu. However, A couple frustrating things. In the tool I use through work (concur) to book travel it sometimes shows the Riu is unavailable, I'm assuming because you are fully booked? Also in this same tool, there is place to send a message and I always send the message of needing a king bed for I'm a larger person. It never seems that you get this message and you were not able to give me a room with a King bed. This happens almost every time, but once in a while you will have a room with a King bed. Is there a way to book directly with you but use my company's policy to confirm if you are really full at times? Also, is there a better way to communicate that I need a King bed?
