Terrible spot for family vacation. I DO NOT recommend this hotel.
I do not recommend it. You cannot rest here. It is a very old hotel with stripped-down rooms and severe infrastructure damage. Even after paying extra for a better room, we were assigned one that had leaks, and the bathroom flooded. The food tastes greasy because everything is overly fried. They do not allow you to purchase affordable tours on the beach due to a monopoly held by a woman inside the hotel who is quite rude. The beach was nice, but I would rather go to RIU Hotel.

Honestly Surprised
We booked Occidental Caribe last minute, first week of January. The price was great, so we decided to risk it. We had read the reviews and saw the rating assigned to this resort but we have been to the Dominican many times and knew that it probably wasn't as bad as we had been reading. And we were right. Ill start with the bad. This is an older resort and you can tell. Rooms: Our first room we were given was 30 degrees celsius because the AC was broken. The sliding patio door also did not close. They offered to fix it, but we opted for a new room with an ocean view for $100USD extra. It was WELL worth it. The view of the pool, beach and ocean was phenomenal. The rooms are very dated, but the AC worked and the bed was very confortable. The showers had very low water pressure and sometimes hot water. But you don't go to Punta Cana to hang out in your hotel room. Food: The a la cartes were actually pretty good. We ate at the Japanese (twice), Dominican and mexican. All were fine, with some great variety. The Buffets are not the worst either. Morning buffet had plenty of fruit, donuts, meat, cheese and of course several omelette stations. Lunch and dinner buffet were fine as well. I can see how some of the more picky eaters may have a problem with how food was displayed or kept out, but you can always find something to eat. They had a grill going every night for chicken, beef and pork. Pasta station as well. The buffet by the beach was not great, but we were too lazy to walk all the way to the main building. The beach buffet didnt have much, we ate mostly rice and beans and the odd hamburger. It was handy to walk 20 feet from our beach chair though. Pools: There are 3 pools. South end pool is the party pool, with loud music, swim up bar and acitvation teams. very busy and not great for relaxing. The middle pool area is for the kids. And the north end pool was very large and very relaxing. This is the pool in front of the Mexican restaurant. Easy to get seats every day, sun all day, and a bar right next to it Juan at this bar was an amazing guy and great to talk to. Beach: You simply cannot beat it. The beachfront of this hotel is massive, with crystal blue water, soft white sand, and many many beach chairs. Pristine beach, warm water and not too many vendors selling things. Lots of shade under the palm trees as well. Atmosphere: There are two main lobby bars. The North end lobby bar is the busier one as most of the evening activities happen there. The layout of the lobby and bar area isnt great but it does the trick. When we went, it was VERY busy. Every night was a party with live bands, karaoke, dancing, and fire breathers. Everyone was very friendly and the place was lively til 12 most nights. Bar staff are very attentive and very friendly. Always smiling and always greeting you. Even though this hotel is rated #49 our 51 in Punta Cana, it really doesn't feel like it. 99% of the staff are smiling, singing, or saying hello which is more than i can say for some higher end resorts I have been to in Punta Cana. We took a chance on this one, and we are glad we did. We would be back at the price point we paid for sure. If you aren't a very picky eater, you will always find something to munch on. And as mentioned the pools and beach are absolutely fantastic, which made it hard to come back to the room everty day. Don't always believe the negative reviews you read on here. Most of us who travel to the DR know what to expect and how to enjoy ourselves. And REMEMBER: TIPPING GOES A LONG WAY.

Great price-quality balance
Our family trip was last minute, so we were looking for a nice balance between price and quality. The hotel was a good choice. The buffet is not the best, but it’s just okay. The beach, pools, and the kind of guests who stay there (not boring people) are the best features.

Expensive. Not worth the expense
Not a 4 star hotel. Not worth paying to improve to premium club. No premium beach as advertised. Premium bar is the same as others but no staff is available to serve. Inside premium room is large but tired and dirty. Dirt is in the corners closets, behind doors and crevices. Lovely beach. Exterior is better cared for than interior. So frustrating to get anything fixed. Broken safe for 3 days before fixed. It just needed to be reset with a code by a supervisor. 3 days of water coming in from the air conditioner and flowing onto the bathroom floor. Someone comes into fix it and leaves a mess from dirty boots and whatever comes out of the ceiling. Noisy. We are in a premium suite 3336 outside is the party pool and inside is the buffet so lots of kitchen yelling early and late and kitchen smells. Staff are very friendly but not able to follow up, nothing is repaired quickly and no follow up to see if it is repaired. On day 5 of a 7 day trip we are still trying to get leaks fixed. We are talking a half inch of water on the bathroom floor. Food is ok. Not served hot. Premium breakfast and lunch is similar to buffet but without the line up. Wait time for food probably makes up for it though. Wouldn’t rebook at this hotel. Spent a lot for this vacation and it was not worth it.

*Non-motorized water sports may be limited, or banned

Each year the actual policies are not published by the local authorities until just prior to Easter. These rules are designed for the safety of everyone, as beaches get extremely busy during this period.
