    Good trip with Friends

The animation team is excellent. Specially William, Camila, Francisca, Ariana, Yunior and Smilla. What I would change is that people can swim past 18h. I liked that every people who work here are very nice and always seem happy. Thank you for this nice trip

    Our Christmas family vacation

Ok, seen all reviews of this hotel, and I noticed there are a few types of people that go down south for different reasons. We've usually been to Punta Cana and Cancun, bigger and newer resorts, and this is not the same. Smaller, older resorts (not "old" as "crumbling down", "old" as from the 70's/80's but very well maintained) have a different vibe. We arrived on Xmas day, learning a few days later that two days prior there was like 4 inches of water in the lobby. It had rained for a month, there were landslides blocking roads to Cabarete. So considering all of this, this place didn't seem affected by all of this at all when we arrived. I can honestly say that I enjoyed my stay there, but I know a lot of people will be complaining about all types of stuff. Only one bar: yup, next to the pool. We're the lines to get a drink so long? Nope. I've seen hotels with 5 bars with longer lines. Always at least 3-4 behind the counter serving drinks. No need to rush in the morning to get chairs at the beach, pretty much always room. Plenty of shade from palm trees. Always someone trying to sell you something though... Beach was nice, no seeweeds in December:) Took nice walks east and west, a lot of nice beachfront restaurants within a 10min walk. Windy, as this place is huge for kite surfing. On Saturday, looks like locals are overtaking the ocean with these on a nice windy day (you can see over 50 in the sky at one point), hard to put a foot in the ocean. Can't comment on the pool as I'm not a "pool person". Can only say that the first couple of days the water was greenish, with all of the flooding from the last couple of weeks they probably gave them issues. By day 3 the water was crystal clear. Food: only disappointing thing could have been the lunch/dinner buffet. Breakfast: can always get an omelet quickly, never big lines. Always bringing coffee. Lunch and dinner: seems always the same. Getting a la carte restaurants were easy when booking after midnight on the app (I've been to resorts that completely booked their restaurants 30 seconds after midnight!). Allowed 3 a week. We travelled with another family (we were 8 total) so one family booked 3x dinner for 8 and the other family could have booked another 3x for 8... Unfortunately, the day you arrive and the next day you won't be able to get a table as everything will be booked) Rooms: basic. Renovated bathroom. People will tell you that they didn't have hot water in the main building. They are right. Did that really bother me? No. Quick 2-3min in the shower and you forgot about it :) TV didn't work. So what? Exactly, nothing to ruin my vacation. Staff everywhere: top notch. Didn't cross one staff member that didn't have a smile on their face, from the maid to bar to check in to restaurants. WiFi: spotty. Works best in main lobby, hit and miss everywhere else. I'm very laid back on vacation, so is my wife. So for something to really piss us off on vacation it would have to be real bad. Sure we could have complained about this and that, but we just want to eat breakfast, get a chair at the beach and read a good book, jump in the waves and take the occasional nap. The kids (teens) made tons of friends, playing beach volleyball or hanging out after supper. For a hotel that was booked solid you don't have wait times anywhere. Get a key for the room? Always someone there at the front desk available. Buffet, never a crowd. Restaurants, always served quickly. Bar, maybe a 5min wait to get a drink or cappuccino at peak times, that's it. Price was right, New Year's Eve party/food was great, weather we can't control. Picky people won't want to go there for the reasons I stated beforehand, so they can pay a few extra thousands to go to more luxurious resorts.

Disappointed by Viva Tangerine by Wyndham in DR

Generally, I do not publish negative reviews, but in the case of this resort, I feel I must justify the reason for the rating of 2 out of 5 stars – and why I will not return here again. Of course, I understand that other people might have had positive visits, but I feel this story should be taken into account. Along with my family, I spent a week here in late December 2024. First, the resort itself is rather small (i.e. it is narrow) and although the grounds themselves are clean (I walked barefoot in many places on stone slabs), the buildings on the resort are old and no amount of fresh white paint can hide that fact (I am guessing that these buildings are 25+ years old). The rooms felt dated and worn out. The beds were reasonably comfortable (in our room 2602). And although we did not see mold itself, I feel like given the high humidity and the fact that the rooms had a dank smell to them, the rooms were just not a pleasant place to spend time. And here, I want to make it clear: this is not connected to the cleaning staff and their efforts. They were helpful, kind and did as much as they could. However, in our room, there were just hooks for towels – so after you showered, you could only hang your towel and not spread it on a drying rack (so your towel would be damp several hours later). Clearly, these rooms were built cheaply without much thought a long time ago and things have only gotten worse with time. Ultimately, in 2023, I had been to a resort in Cuba that had been built much more recently and it was much more inviting and comfortable. The food at Viva Tangerine Wyndham also was mediocre at best. I mean, even in Latin America, the supposedly-fried plantain slices were often disappointing in taste. While presentation-wise, the food looked good, I have been to resorts where you actually wanted to eat it – not just eat it because you are hungry. And the “a-la-carte” on-site restaurants were not any better. The Mexican restaurant food was particularly bad. Again, this is not the fault of the staff --- clearly, it is management (either on-site or at corporate HQ) that is trying to save a buck... Sadly, the situation with the drinks at the bar is the same: I would suggest just sticking to the draft Dominican “Presidente” beer (which is very light), but at least it is beer. The mixed drinks were not very tasty and this is because they are made with flavoured liquids from large bottles called “classico” (so, you have whisky-flavoured or tequila-flavoured bottles as well as artificial fruit flavoured ones). I only had a few of these drinks during the week – and there is only one bar on the resort, so you have to line up to get a drink (and the staff working there deserve a tip, because they are clearly over-worked). The one large pool on the resort is nice --- and useful for families with small kids. Daily music activities take place near the pool (and they continue in the evenings). Before arriving, I emailed the resort and requested a room away from this area in order to be able to sleep in the evenings (but I was close enough to hear the music). At least there are many lounge-chairs on the property and the beach so that you should be able to get one to lie down and relax. The beach and the sea are also disappointing unless you are doing kite-surfing. The wind is quite strong and although this is not a problem when outside, it does mean that the sea has strong waves --- and so, you will not be able to have a relaxing swim. Rather, you will spend 10 minutes throwing yourself against the strong waves and then leave exhausted. And although the beach itself stretches for a long distance, there is also an area where effluent is spilled into the sea. So, yes, sunbathe or walk on the beach and even get your toes wet, but this area is best for kite-surfers. And on top of all of this, in December 2024, there were floods in this geographic area and as a result, there was water contamination. Yes, bottled water is provided in your room, but we still got traveller's diarrhea --- (I admit that I had lettuce in my salad from the buffet).  I had been to 3 other countries in Latin America before visiting the Dominican Republic and this was the only country where I had gotten this stomach infection. Sadly, even if I had not gotten this infection, I still think that this resort is NOT WORTH VISITING AGAIN. If other visitors enjoyed it, then I am happy for them, but I feel that I could have gotten better value for my money elsewhere.

    Disappointed...

We were there as a couple December 16 to the 27th. We were in building 4 and had no hot water. After 4 days of getting the run around and pushing the issue, they changed us to the building above the buffet and bar and everything was good. The buffet was mediocre at best except for the Christmas eve gala. It was excellent. The Melt (Fusion) à la carte was absolutely terrible. Mexican and Italian were good. Only 1 bar so line ups can be long. The pool was filthy by the end of our stay. Animation was repetitive and some of the team members were always yelling. Michael Jackson show was good. Silent party was a lot of fun. It rained so much that rooms on ground floor flooded out and the lobby had about 12 inches of water... which left almost everyone at the bar area and it doesn't accommodate all the guests. We enjoyed the Beach Side restaurant (on the resort but not included). We also enjoyed walks on the beach to the many restaurants along the beach. All in all, weather aside, we would never go back.
